Namo Bharat Set to Connect Delhi and Meerut by June

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has started trial runs of the Namo Bharat train on a 4.5 km stretch between New Ashok Nagar and Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi — a key step in the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project.

“The train was manually operated at a slow speed to test compatibility with the signalling system. Further evaluations will cover integration with key subsystems such as the track, platform screen doors (PSD), and overhead power supply,” said an NCRTC official. High-speed trials will follow in the coming days.

Currently, 55 km of the corridor — from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South — is operational, including nine stations in Uttar Pradesh and two in Delhi. Sarai Kale Khan, which will serve as the Delhi terminal for the RRTS, is nearing completion.

NCRTC plans to make the corridor up to Sarai Kale Khan operational by the end of June. After a month of trial runs, the Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) is expected to inspect and certify the route within 15 days, clearing the way for full operations.
