PM Modi to Dedicate Three New Metro Lines to Kolkata

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate three new Kolkata Metro corridors—the Green, Orange, and Yellow Lines—on August 22.

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has extended an invitation to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to attend the launch event. As part of the inauguration, a new subway at Howrah metro station will also be unveiled.

The Green Line will be completed with the opening of the Sealdah–Esplanade section.

The Orange Line will begin operations from Ruby Crossing to Beleghata, adding four new stations.

The Yellow Line will connect Noapara to Jai Hind (Biman Bandar/Airport), also with four new stations, offering direct metro access to the airport for the first time.

Minister Vaishnaw highlighted the Centre’s continued investment in Bengal’s railway infrastructure, noting ₹83,765 crore worth of ongoing rail projects, a record ₹13,955 crore budgetary allocation, and the redevelopment of 101 stations across the state. He also pointed out that nine Vande Bharat and two Amrit Bharat trains are currently operating in West Bengal.
