Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Pune District Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar has announced the state cabinet’s approval of two key infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing urban and regional connectivity in Pune.
Speaking after the cabinet meeting, Pawar said, “The cabinet has approved a proposal to construct two additional stations—Balajinagar and Bibwewadi—on the extended Swargate–Katraj corridor under Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project. The additional expenditure for these stations has been approved in principle.”
The extended 5.46 km underground metro corridor will now include five stations: Market Yard, Bibwewadi, Padmavati, Balajinagar, and Katraj. With a project cost of ₹3,654 crore, the extension will be jointly funded by the central and state governments along with private sector participation. Completion is targeted by 2029–30.
In another significant move, the state cabinet also approved Maharashtra’s financial contribution to the proposed third and fourth suburban railway lines between Pune and Lonavala. Pawar noted that this project will help ease commuter congestion, enhance capacity, and improve rail connectivity between Pune and Mumbai.
These approvals mark a major step forward in bolstering Pune’s transportation infrastructure and supporting the region’s rapid urban growth.
