Rapid Revolution: Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor Fully Opens

The final station of the Delhi–Ghaziabad–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor at Sarai Kale Khan is set to become operational on 17 September, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday.

With its inauguration, the full 82-km corridor from Delhi's Sarai Kale Khan to Meerut’s Modipuram will be open, reducing travel time between the two cities to under an hour while serving all intermediate stations. Trial runs on the full stretch have been completed, while a 55-km section from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South—comprising 11 stations—is already in use.

Sarai Kale Khan station will serve as a major multimodal transport hub, seamlessly connecting regional rail, Delhi Metro, and intercity bus services. Spanning 215 meters in length, 50 meters in width, and 15 meters in height, it will also act as a key interchange for three future RRTS corridors.

Developed under the "Make in India" initiative, the ₹30,000 crore project features modern trainsets designed in Hyderabad and manufactured by Alstom in Gujarat. Once fully operational, the RRTS is expected to significantly shift commuter preferences, increasing the public transport modal share from 37% to 63%.
