In a major step toward enhancing rail safety, Indian Railways will implement the indigenous ‘Kavach’ automatic train protection system across the Guntur Railway Division.
The South Central Railway has approved the deployment of Kavach over 1,570 km at an estimated cost of ₹460 crore. Under Phase I, the Guntur Division will see Kavach installed on 532.04 km of key railway routes, with a dedicated budget of ₹98.16 crore. Targeted sections include:
Nandyal–Guntur: 256.98 km, Guntur–Nadikudi: 95.25 km, Nadikudi–Bibinagar: 152.69 km, Guntur–Krishna Canal: 27.12 km
The rollout will involve optical fiber cabling, telecom tower installation, data center integration, and fitting onboard Kavach equipment in locomotives.
Kavach, developed and approved by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), automatically halts trains during emergencies, such as signal overshoots or potential collisions, thereby significantly boosting passenger safety and operational efficiency.
