Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) is targeting completion of the Rishikesh–Karnaprayag Rail Line by 2028, as per an update from the Railway Board.
The 125-km rail project, sanctioned in 2016, is aimed at enhancing connectivity in Uttarakhand’s hilly regions, improving accessibility and supporting regional development. A key highlight of the project is the construction of a 14.58-km tunnel, set to be India’s longest transportation tunnel, reflecting the engineering complexity of building infrastructure in the Himalayan terrain.
The first phase of the project was awarded to RVNL in 2020 after land acquisition and forest clearances were secured. While the initial completion target was December 2026, timelines have been revised due to the scale and technical challenges involved.
Once completed, the rail line is expected to significantly improve access to major pilgrimage and tourist destinations while boosting economic activity in the region, reinforcing Indian Railways’ focus on infrastructure expansion in challenging geographies.
