Siliguri Locomotive Shed Gears Up for a ₹130 Crore Transformation

The Union Railway Ministry has approved ₹130 crore for the expansion and modernisation of the Siliguri diesel locomotive shed at Siliguri Junction, increasing its maintenance capacity from 100 to 250 locomotives. This upgrade will position it among the largest locomotive sheds in India.

The project includes the installation of advanced maintenance and logistics infrastructure, along with modern machinery for servicing Evolution Series locomotives—manufactured in India through a joint venture between Indian Railways and Wabtec to cater to both domestic and export markets.

This expansion will significantly boost the operational efficiency of the Northeast Frontier Railway zone, strengthening both freight and passenger services. It is also expected to create employment opportunities for youth in Siliguri, Darjeeling, Terai, and Dooars, while contributing to Indian Railways’ broader push for infrastructure modernisation and enhanced logistics across the network.
