Sky-High Achievement: 65-Metre Span Advances Mumbai Metro Line 5

In a significant engineering achievement for the Mumbai Metro Line 5 project, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully installed a 65-metre-long steel span over the Vasai-Diva railway line.

This span, part of the Thane–Bhiwandi segment, has been erected at Anjurphata in Bhiwandi. Weighing 456 tonnes, the open web girder steel bridge connects two metro piers over Central Railway tracks between Kharbav and Bhiwandi stations. Positioned 20 metres above ground, the span marks a key step in constructing the viaduct that will carry Metro Line 5.

Once completed, Metro Line 5 will span 24.9 km, connecting Thane to Kalyan via Bhiwandi. The corridor will include 17 stations, running mostly on an elevated route with a three-kilometre underground section through Bhiwandi. The line is expected to significantly enhance connectivity across major urban and semi-urban areas in the Mumbai region.

The span installation was carried out during a meticulously planned overnight operation. The MMRDA coordinated closely with Central Railway and local traffic police to safely execute the lift over the active railway line, ensuring minimal disruption and maximum efficiency.
