The Heart of Lucknow Gets Connected: Metro Phase 1B Approved

Lucknow Metro has reached a significant milestone as Phase 1B — the East-West Corridor — has secured approval from the Public Investment Board (PIB), advancing the expansion of the city's urban transit network.

This development comes eight years after the launch of the Metro's first phase in September 2017 and moves the project one step closer to final approval from the Union Cabinet. The proposed corridor spans 11.165 km, connecting Charbagh to Vasant Kunj, and will traverse several densely populated and strategically important areas of the city.

The corridor will feature a combination of 4.286 km of elevated track and 6.879 km of underground sections, with 12 stations planned — five elevated and seven underground. Charbagh, a key transit hub, will serve as the starting point, while Vasant Kunj, an emerging residential locality, will be the terminal station.

A highlight of this phase is the planned interchange at Charbagh station with the existing North-South Corridor, enabling smooth and efficient transfers for commuters. With an estimated cost of ₹5,801 crore and a projected construction timeline of five years, Phase 1B is expected to enhance connectivity and significantly reduce traffic congestion across the city.
