Trivandrum, Kozhikode Metro Gets Green Light from CM

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan informed the State Assembly that the Metro rail projects in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode are progressing in accordance with the 2017 Metro Rail Policy.

Both projects are being implemented by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL). In Thiruvananthapuram, initial work has commenced with the construction of the Sreekaryam flyover. KMRL has submitted multiple alignment proposals, which are currently being reviewed by a high-level committee led by the Chief Secretary to finalise the most commuter-friendly route. A Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) and an Alternative Analysis Report have also been submitted and are under state government review. Once approved, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared.

In Kozhikode, the metro project remains in the planning stage, with DPR preparation to follow, in line with national guidelines and under KMRL’s supervision.

The Chief Minister also confirmed that Phase II of the Kochi Metro, a stretch of 11.2 km from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Kakkanad Infopark, is currently under construction. However, no additional metro expansion in Kochi is planned at this time.
