To ease chronic traffic congestion in South Delhi, the Delhi government has proposed the construction of four elevated roads, aimed at enhancing connectivity in traffic-prone areas such as Freedom Fighters Enclave and Sainik Farm.
These localities have suffered from inadequate road access for years, primarily due to severe congestion along the narrow and encroached Ignou Road, which lacks viable alternative routes. Officials report that the proposed elevated corridors include:
A connector between Chhatarpur Main Road and SSN Marg
A 2 km elevated stretch from Chhatarpur’s 100-Foot Road to Ignou Gate
An elevated road along the length of Ignou Road
A longer corridor linking Anuvrat Marg to IGI Airport via INA Market
The Public Works Department (PWD) has been instructed to carry out feasibility studies for all four proposed alignments. Road widening has been ruled out due to dense commercial and residential development along existing routes.
Past interventions, such as the installation of concrete barriers, have failed to resolve the issue. Ignou Road, a key artery connecting residential areas like Neb Sarai, Paryavaran Complex, and Saidulajab to Saket Metro Station, remains heavily congested—particularly near the MB Road intersection and Ambedkar Nagar depot.
The proposed elevated roads are expected to provide long-term relief and create more efficient access routes through this underserved section of the city.
