Punjab's Triple City Transformation: A ₹140 Crore Investment

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has announced a ₹140 crore urban development project to enhance 42 km of road infrastructure in Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Jalandhar.

The project will feature accessible footpaths with landscaping to reduce dust pollution and improve aesthetics. Key services, including streetlights, bus stops, and water supply lines, will be realigned. A decade-long maintenance plan will ensure the upkeep of roads, featuring proper lane markings and upgraded drainage and sewerage systems. According to the Minister, "The project will include the construction of accessible and visually appealing footpaths, complemented by landscaping to curb dust pollution."

Roads will be redesigned to ease traffic congestion, maintain uniform widths, and prevent recurring damage. The initiative will roll out in three phases: a four-month planning stage with leading urban planners, an eight-month construction phase adhering to international standards, and a ten-year maintenance plan incorporating mechanized cleaning. The upgrades will cover 17.5 km in Amritsar, 12.4 km in Ludhiana, and 12.3 km in Jalandhar.

The project draws inspiration from Delhi’s streetscaping initiative, which transformed vacant spaces into vibrant urban zones featuring benches, walkways, cycle tracks, and greenery.
