Thiruvananthapuram ORR Gets ₹3,200 Cr Shot in the Arm

The Kerala government has approved ₹3,200 crore for land acquisition associated with the Thiruvananthapuram Outer Ring Road (ORR) project, marking a significant step forward for a major infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity and supporting regional development.

The proposed 62.7-kilometre corridor, planned along the NH-866 alignment, is expected to improve transportation links between Vizhinjam International Seaport and the northern parts of the Thiruvananthapuram metropolitan region. The funding approval will facilitate compensation payments to 6,563 landowners affected by the project, whose properties fall within the designated alignment.

Authorities have indicated that compensation disbursement is likely to commence within the next two months, providing long-awaited relief to affected families and helping accelerate project implementation. The decision follows consultations between the state government and representatives of landowners regarding compensation mechanisms and project timelines.

Stakeholders, including members of the Landowners’ Action Council, have welcomed the approval, viewing it as a major breakthrough in advancing the long-pending acquisition process and enabling progress on the project.

Upon completion, the Outer Ring Road is expected to significantly improve traffic flow, reduce travel times, and strengthen logistics connectivity to the Vizhinjam International Seaport. The corridor is also anticipated to support economic activity across the region by improving access between industrial, commercial, and residential hubs.

The project is envisioned as a strategic transportation link that will not only enhance regional mobility but also facilitate future urban expansion, infrastructure development, and economic growth across southern Kerala.
