The Sun Rises on Andhra Pradesh's Thermal Power Stations

The Andhra Pradesh Energy Department is evaluating the development of solar power projects on vacant land at state-owned thermal power plants (TPPs) to partly meet their auxiliary energy needs and monetise underutilised assets.

A tender has been issued for preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) at the Sri Damodaram Sanjeevaiah Thermal Power Station (SDSTPS) in Nellore, where approximately 24 acres have been earmarked. The selected agency will have 45 days to complete the study. A similar initiative is planned at the Rayalaseema Thermal Power Plant in Kadapa.

Officials noted that solar energy could power systems like boiler feed pumps and coal handling units, reducing reliance on grid electricity. This strategy supports the National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP) developed by NITI Aayog, which aims to unlock the value of public infrastructure.

With thermal plants consuming up to 10% of their output for internal use—well above CERC norms—the solar integration is also expected to enhance efficiency and sustainability. Hydropower plants with idle land are also being considered for future solar installations.
