20 GW Strong: Green Energy Corridor Powers Ahead

Under the Green Energy Corridor (GEC) initiative, 20 GW of the planned 24 GW transmission capacity has already been commissioned, with the remaining capacity expected to be completed soon.

“We have nearly completed Phase I of the Green Energy Corridor. Of the 24 GW target, 20 GW is already operational. The remaining work is delayed due to last-mile issues such as Right of Way (RoW) challenges. Four out of the eight participating states have achieved 100% completion, while the other four have reached between 90% and 94%. Phase I will be fully completed shortly,” an official stated.

Launched in 2015, the GEC project aims to strengthen both inter-state and intra-state transmission systems (ISTS and InSTS), along with Renewable Energy Management Centres (REMCs), reactive power compensation, and energy storage systems. It is supported by Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to enable efficient renewable energy evacuation. For FY2025–26, the scheme has a budget allocation of ₹600 crore, targeting the development of 9,767 circuit kilometers (ckm) of transmission lines and 22,689 MVA of substation capacity across eight states.

The government also plans to complete Phase II of the GEC within the next two years. This phase will enable the evacuation of an additional 20 GW of renewable energy and will cover seven states: Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh.
