The Government of Goa, under the leadership of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, has inaugurated the state’s first common hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facility at Pissurlem in Sattari taluka, marking a major step forward in responsible waste management.
Developed at a cost of ₹125 crore and operated by Ponda Envocare Ltd. (PEL), the facility is designed to manage Goa’s growing hazardous waste load—estimated at approximately 45,000 metric tonnes per year. The plant offers dedicated infrastructure for landfillable, incinerable, and recyclable waste, with the following annual capacities:
25,000 tonnes of landfillable waste, 25,000 tonnes of co-processed waste, 14,000 tonnes of incinerable waste
A key feature of the facility is its rotary kiln incinerator, which operates at high temperatures to ensure complete and safe destruction of hazardous materials. The system is equipped with continuous emission monitoring to ensure compliance with environmental standards and mitigate pollution risks.
This project represents a critical milestone in Goa’s environmental strategy, enhancing the state's capacity to safely manage hazardous waste while protecting public health and the natural ecosystem.
