The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in collaboration with renowned architect Hafeez Contractor, has unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art underground sports complex beneath Mumbai’s iconic Mahalaxmi Racecourse.
The proposed development spans the 211-acre racecourse, currently leased by the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC). Under the plan, 91 acres will be retained for horse racing, while the remaining 120 acres will undergo major redevelopment.
At the heart of the project is a two-level underground facility:
The first level, covering 20 acres, will feature Olympic-grade sports infrastructure including:
A 400-metre athletics track, Olympic-size swimming pool, Six tennis and squash courts
Skating rink, shooting range, table tennis zones, Courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton, handball, kho-kho, Cricket nets, martial arts zones, and a gymnastics arena
The second level will provide parking for 5,000 vehicles, easing surface congestion.
Above ground, the plan envisions transforming the open space into a topiary garden, an urban forest, concert ground, and potentially an auditorium, ensuring a green and recreational environment for citizens.
The BMC is currently conducting feasibility assessments, particularly around construction beneath existing stormwater drains and sewage lines, to ensure minimal disruption to critical infrastructure.
The project aims to create a world-class training and recreation hub for young Indian athletes, while preserving the historic integrity of the Mahalaxmi Racecourse.
