Adani Eyes 15% Mumbai Airport Expansion via Slum Redevelopment

Mumbai International Airport (MIAL), managed by the Adani Group, is exploring a roughly 15 percent expansion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) contingent upon clearing approximately 275 acres of surrounding land currently occupied by slum settlements.

This revitalized initiative coincides with upcoming plans to demolish the existing Terminal 1, which will unlock additional space for critical airport infrastructure. The land parcels in question are owned by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and leased jointly to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the airport operator. Past redevelopment attempts, including a major push a decade ago, stalled before implementation. To overcome historical hurdles, the MMRDA is structuring a new approach focused on in-situ rehabilitation for eligible residents, a strategy intended to secure greater community acceptance.

While the newly acquired footprint is primarily slated to support expanded runway and terminal capabilities, decisions regarding its potential commercial utilization remain unconfirmed.
