ADB Backs Indore Metro: $190M for Underground Growth

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $190 million (approximately ₹1,580 crore) financial package to support the development of the Indore Metro Rail Project in Madhya Pradesh.

The project involves the construction of an 8.62-kilometre underground metro line with seven stations, connecting high-traffic areas of Indore to the airport. Designed to enhance urban mobility, the metro system will incorporate modern, inclusive infrastructure with accessibility features for the elderly, women, children, and persons with disabilities.

ADB India Country Director Mio Oka highlighted the project's potential to reduce pollution and empower vulnerable groups by creating employment and entrepreneurial opportunities—particularly for women. The metro is expected to cut annual carbon emissions by approximately 12,414 tonnes.

Key features of the project include multimodal integration with buses and feeder services, and the provision of commercial space for women-led self-help groups. Safety audits and real-time ridership data will guide future enhancements.

The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (MPMRCL) will oversee implementation, with operations expected to begin by January 2030.
