Afcons' 'Flamingo' TBM Blasts Through National Record

Afcons Infrastructure has set a new national benchmark in tunnelling by completing 777 metres in a single month using Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) ‘Flamingo’.

The record, achieved in July 2025, is part of CIDCO’s Hetawane Water Supply Augmentation Scheme—specifically Water Tunnel Package-1, a critical project aimed at enhancing drinking water supply to Navi Mumbai and its surrounding areas. The tunnel, with a diameter of 3.2 metres, forms a key segment of the 8.7-km-long water tunnel, of which Afcons has already completed 3.4 km.

This milestone surpasses the previous national record of 653 metres, set in July 2024 at the Amar Mahal II Tunnel project in Mumbai. Afcons had earlier come close in May 2025, achieving 714 metres in a single month—another significant feat in itself.

The latest achievement underscores Afcons’ leadership in tunnelling technology and its growing contribution to India’s infrastructure development. Once complete, the Hetawane Water Supply Augmentation Scheme will play a vital role in meeting the increasing drinking water needs of Navi Mumbai’s rapidly growing urban and industrial population.
