Ahmedabad-Mumbai Bullet Train: Cost Climbs to ₹2.1 Lakh Crore

The estimated cost for the 508-km Ahmedabad-Mumbai high-speed rail project has been revised to approximately Rs 2.1 lakh crore, up from its original Rs 1.1 lakh crore estimate. A proposal seeking Union Cabinet approval was submitted on August 25, 2026. The railway ministry attributes the escalation primarily to land acquisition hurdles in Maharashtra and delays in procuring Japanese train sets. Despite these setbacks, the corridor's first phase remains on track for an August 2027 launch, backed by funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and government budgetary allocations.
