Alcatel Bets Big on India: Local Manufacturing, Global Ambitions

Alcatel, the French technology brand licensed under Nokia and operated by TCL Communication, is set to relaunch its smartphone business in India after a seven-year absence.

With an initial investment of USD 30 million (around Rs 260 crore), Alcatel plans to locally manufacture smartphones and target the Rs 20,000–Rs 25,000 price range. The brand will introduce stylus-equipped smartphones, a feature typically reserved for premium devices priced above Rs 80,000.

The company has partnered with a leading Indian electronics manufacturing services firm to produce these devices. The first batch of made-in-India smartphones is expected to launch by the end of May or early June, and will be available for sale on Flipkart’s main platform as well as its quick commerce arm, FK Minutes.

Alcatel sees India as a key market for its global manufacturing and export ambitions, with the company aiming to appeal to India’s youth-driven market through a digital-first strategy, innovative consumer engagement, and targeted marketing. A strong supply chain is already in place, and the team is focused on introducing new technologies made in India.
