AM/NS India Forges Greener Roads with Steel Slag Technology

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has secured a technology license from CSIR–Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) to process and market steel slag aggregates for road construction, marking a major step toward sustainable infrastructure development.

This cutting-edge technology enables the conversion of steel manufacturing by-products into cost-effective, high-performance road materials, offering a viable alternative to conventional aggregates. Roads constructed with processed steel slag are estimated to be 30–40% more economical and can last up to three times longer than traditional bitumen roads, resulting in significantly lower maintenance costs. Due to its high strength and durability, steel slag is well-suited for use in diverse and challenging terrains, including coastal, arid, and hilly regions.

With India’s steel output projected to generate nearly 60 million tonnes of slag over the next five years, this initiative supports large-scale industrial waste valorization. AM/NS India’s Gujarat plant will act as the flagship site for deploying this technology, setting a precedent for sustainable road-building practices across the country.

The initiative is being actively supported by the Ministry of Steel, in coordination with the Ministry of Science & Technology and the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, as part of a national push to integrate circular economy principles into infrastructure development.
