AM/NS India Launches First Scrap Processing Plant in Khopoli

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has launched its first scrap processing facility in Khopoli, Maharashtra, with a capacity of 120 ktpa.

To strengthen domestic scrap availability and improve steel production efficiency, the company plans to set up at least three more facilities by FY26, expanding its total processing capacity to 0.5 MTPA. With an investment of ₹350 crore, these facilities will enhance material quality, reduce costs, and help formalize India's scrap industry.

With 65% of its steelmaking capacity utilizing gas-based direct-reduced iron (DRI) and electric arc furnace (EAF) technology—both well-suited for scrap—the company is intensifying its recycling efforts.

By 2030-2035, India’s scrap demand is expected to reach 50 MT, while domestic generation may lag at 40 MT. As the nation’s reliance on scrap grows, AM/NS India’s strategic expansion aims to bolster self-sufficiency in the sector. The company targets 10% scrap utilization by 2030.
