AMNS plans to set up scrap processing centres in Maharashtra & Gujrat

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AMNS) India is planning to establish three scrap processing centers in India, with a total capital infusion of around Rs 100 crore. The company aims to set up two of these centers in Hazira and Ahmedabad in Gujarat, and another one in Khopoli, Maharashtra.

The plan, which has been submitted to the board of AMNS India, outlines the goal of having all three centers operational by the year 2024. Currently, AMNS India owns and operates a nine million tonne (MT) plant at Hazira, where it utilizes three to five percent of scrap in the steel manufacturing process.

With the establishment of these new centers, AMNS India aims to increase its usage of scrap in steel production to 9-10 percent. Currently, the overall level of recycled steel usage in primary steel production is approximately 10 percent, despite recycled steel contributing to 22.5 percent of the total domestic steel production of 140 million tonnes.

Union Steel Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has previously stated that the ministry intends to encourage primary steel producers to use 50 percent of their input from scrapped or recycled steel by the year 2047, in an effort to achieve a circular economy. This initiative aligns with global efforts to promote sustainability and reduce environmental impact in the steel industry.
