NITI Aayog has released a draft blueprint under its Accelerating Sustainable State Energy Transition (ASSET) platform to position Andhra Pradesh among India’s top three renewable energy hubs by 2035. The roadmap was presented by NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam to Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand at the State Secretariat.
The blueprint lays out a comprehensive strategy to fast-track the state’s energy transition, with a focus on delivering reliable, affordable, and clean electricity to all consumers. Currently, renewable sources account for about 47 percent of Andhra Pradesh’s power generation. To strengthen this share, the plan targets the addition of 35 GW of solar capacity, 12 GW of wind capacity, and 55–60 GWh of energy storage to meet domestic demand.
In addition, the state is envisioned as a major renewable energy export hub, with proposals for 30 GW of solar and 25–30 GW of wind capacity dedicated to export-oriented projects. The blueprint estimates investments of Rs 3.3–3.4 lakh crore for the energy transition and Rs 4–4.2 lakh crore for developing export infrastructure, taking total investments to around Rs 7.5 lakh crore. Nearly 90 percent of this investment is expected from private players, with the potential to generate employment for up to six lakh people.
Infrastructure development forms a key pillar of the plan, including upgrades to transmission networks, green corridors, substations, and distribution systems. NITI Aayog projects that these measures could reduce power purchase costs to around Rs 3.90–Rs 4 per unit, improving affordability for households, farmers, and industries.
