Andhra's Water Lifeline: Polavaram Project Set for 2027 Launch

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the Polavaram Irrigation Project upon its completion, now tentatively scheduled for June 2027.

The update was shared by Andhra Pradesh Water Resources Minister Nimmala Rama Naidu in New Delhi, following a review meeting chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil. While the state had initially targeted December 2026 for completion, the revised timeline aligns with the Godavari Pushkaralu festival in July 2027, aiming to facilitate the Prime Minister’s presence at the inauguration.

Minister Rama Naidu noted that Union Minister Patil welcomed Andhra Pradesh’s commitment to the project and expressed satisfaction with its progress and transparency. He reiterated the project's significance, including the stabilisation of 23.5 lakh acres of ayacut, provision of drinking water, and generation of 960 MW of hydroelectric power.

The Minister also emphasized that work is advancing on both the main construction and the crucial resettlement and rehabilitation (R&R) components, underscoring the state’s determination to meet the new deadline.
