BEML, Korean Majors Ink Deal for India's Crane Future

BEML, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries have formed a partnership to design, develop, and manufacture next-generation conventional and autonomous maritime and port cranes in India.

The collaboration supports India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives and aligns with the government’s strategy of involving public-sector enterprises in global industrial partnerships. As part of the agreement, the companies will also provide after-sales services, spare parts supply, and training support.

India’s maritime sector has long depended on Chinese-made cranes—an issue heightened when the government imposed restrictions on imports from China following border tensions. By working with leading international players, this initiative seeks to reduce import dependence, strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities, and enhance India’s strategic self-reliance in port and maritime infrastructure. According to BEML, the partnership marks a significant step toward bolstering India’s indigenous manufacturing capacity in this critical sector.
