India's largest greenfield domestic cargo terminal (DCT) by designed capacity was inaugurated at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, on February 27, 2025. Operated by Bangalore International Airport (BIAL) in partnership with Menzies Aviation, the state-of-the-art facility is set to boost domestic cargo handling capabilities.
Covering over seven acres, the terminal is designed to handle up to 360,000 tonnes of cargo, with a future expansion potential to 400,000 tonnes. It features 42 truck docks, more than 400 cargo bins, conveyors integrated with X-ray machines, and 30 unit load device (ULD) build-up and breakdown stations. For greater operational efficiency, the terminal includes 40 handheld terminals and self-service kiosks for agents, facilitating smoother processes. Additionally, real-time shipment tracking, data analytics, and barcode/QR code-based communication are incorporated to improve data exchange with airline systems, reduce turnaround times, and enhance overall efficiency.
Bengaluru airport, a major export hub for perishables like mangoes and coriander, is expanding its capacity to handle a variety of specialized cargo, including valuables, live animals, dangerous goods, and radioactive materials.
