Bhilai Builds Big: ₹145 Cr Sewage Plant Begins Construction

The Bhilai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun construction of a 150 MLD modern sewage treatment plant (STP) near Kachandur village, a project aimed at significantly enhancing the city’s water quality and environmental health.

BMC Commissioner Rajeev Kumar Pandey inspected the site as work commenced on the sludge treatment facility. The STP will scientifically treat wastewater flowing through Kosa Nala and Telha Nala, two major drains that currently contribute to water pollution. By processing this sewage, the project will help reduce contamination of local water bodies while enabling the reuse of treated water for irrigation and other non-potable applications. Officials emphasized that “this initiative marks a major step toward cleaning the city’s key water bodies and ensuring a healthier environment for residents.”

Sanctioned at ₹145 crore, with an additional ₹44.55 crore allocated for 15 years of operations and maintenance, the plant is slated for completion within 24 months. Once operational, it is expected to improve hygiene, strengthen environmental protection, and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable identity for Bhilai and its surrounding regions.
