Union Minister for Civil Aviation, K Ram Mohan Naidu, has announced that construction at Bhogapuram International Airport has reached 36% completion. The project, which is slated for completion by June 2026, is progressing steadily with key infrastructure components like the air traffic control tower and terminal building advancing rapidly.
GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport (GVIAL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of GMR Airports (GAL), is spearheading the development and operation of Bhogapuram Airport. The project involves a comprehensive 40-year plan covering design, finance, construction, development, operation, and maintenance, with an option to extend for another 20 years. The airport, set on approximately 2,300 acres with an estimated cost of ₹4,750 crore, aims to bolster economic growth and tourism in North Andhra.
The new airport is expected to generate around 5,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly, contributing significantly to the local economy. In addition to Bhogapuram, the Central government is planning new airports in Mulapeta (Srikakulam), Dagadarthi (Nellore), and Kuppam (Chittoor) in Andhra Pradesh, as well as Nagarjunasagar in Telangana. Technical feasibility studies are underway for these sites.
The Bhogapuram airport will also feature a state-of-the-art maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) facility and an air cargo complex, further enhancing its role in regional development and connectivity.
