Bhutan & Adani: 5,000 MW Hydro Power Play

The Adani Group and Bhutan's Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop 5,000 MW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan, marking a major milestone in regional renewable energy collaboration.

The MoU was signed in Thimphu by Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, Managing Director of DGPC, and Naresh Telgu, COO (PSP & Hydro) of Adani Green Hydro. The ceremony was attended by Bhutan's Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay, the Minister for Energy and Natural Resources Lyonpo Gem Tshering, and other senior government officials.

This agreement builds on the existing partnership between DGPC and Adani, which includes the 570/900 MW Wangchhu Hydropower Project—where DGPC holds a 51% stake and Adani 49%.

Under the new agreement, the two organizations will collaborate on identifying, planning, and developing a portfolio of hydropower and pumped storage projects totaling 5,000 MW. The projects will be rolled out in phases, beginning with the identification of viable sites and the preparation of detailed project reports.

This strategic partnership underscores Bhutan’s commitment to expanding its clean energy capacity and highlights the growing cooperation between DGPC and Adani in the renewable energy sector.
