Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has laid the foundation stone for the Mamallan Reservoir project near Nemmeli, with a total investment of ₹342.60 crore.
The reservoir, situated between Kelambakkam and Mamallapuram in Chengalpattu district, is designed to meet the drinking water requirements of Chennai city. According to the Chief Minister, surplus water from 69 lakes that currently drain into the sea will be captured and stored in the reservoir. It is expected to supply 12 crore litres of water per day, benefiting over 13 lakh residents in suburban areas including Sholinganallur, Medavakkam, and Pallikaranai.
State Water Resources Department Secretary J. Jayakathan noted that the Mamallan Reservoir will have a total capacity of 17 crore litres per day, or 6,605 crore litres annually, spanning 5,161 acres. This will become Chennai’s sixth reservoir, complementing existing sources such as Poondi, Cholavaram, Puzhal, Veeranam Lake, and the city’s desalination plants
