BMC to Partially Open Coastal Road-Bandra Worli Sea Link in September

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that one arm of the arch bridge connecting the Mumbai Coastal Road to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) will be operational by mid-September. The south-bound carriageway, opening on September 15, will initially facilitate northbound traffic from Marine Drive towards Bandra.

Final touches, including asphalting, were completed last weekend, taking advantage of favorable weather conditions. The BMC and traffic police are coordinating to finalize the traffic management plan for this new route.

BMC Chief Bhushan Gagrani stated that while one arm of the bridge will be ready this month, the other will take longer, with completion expected by year-end. The accompanying promenade, extending from Breach Candy to Worli, will also open by December and will feature a dedicated cycling track.

The bridge spans, which include two arches and additional sections, required 7,000 metric tonnes of steel, sourced from Jindal Steel and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India. The bridge is being treated with a specialized five-level paint system to protect against coastal corrosion.

Concerns raised on social media about the different levels of the bridge spans were addressed by the BMC, clarifying that the design accommodates the curvature of the approach road, ensuring a smooth transition for vehicles.
