Chennai Beach-Egmore Fourth Line Project Races Ahead

Southern Railway has announced significant progress on the ₹274-crore Chennai Beach-Egmore fourth line project, a key infrastructure upgrade set to transform the region’s rail connectivity. The ongoing construction has necessitated a temporary suspension of MRTS services between Chennai Beach and Chintadripet to facilitate the extensive work.

While most of the project is nearing completion, a 110-meter section remains incomplete due to pending land exchange issues with the Navy. Work on this section has yet to start, awaiting final permissions from naval authorities.

Southern Railway has assured commuters that MRTS services will resume within a month of receiving the necessary approvals from the Navy. The fourth line is expected to significantly boost the frequency of long-distance and freight trains, enhancing operations at Chennai Egmore and Tambaram terminals.

Once finished, the new line will alleviate congestion on existing tracks, improve operational efficiency, and expand the suburban rail network’s capacity. The project promises to greatly enhance connectivity and streamline travel across the region, marking a major step forward in Chennai’s railway infrastructure development.
