Chennai's Next Big Leap: Vadapalani's ₹480-Crore Transformation

The Vadapalani bus terminus, one of Chennai’s busiest transit points, is on track for a significant transformation. Chennai Metro Asset Management Limited (CMAML)—a joint venture between Chennai Metro Rail and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation—has invited tenders for the ambitious redevelopment project.

Spread across 6.65 acres on the busy Arcot Road corridor, the site will be converted into an integrated multimodal transport hub with a commercial complex, at an estimated cost of over ₹480 crore. Currently handling more than 158 buses and around 1,100 daily services, the upgraded facility will feature a ground-level transit hub with five boarding bays and two alighting bays to enhance passenger flow and operational efficiency.

The redesigned hub will have dual entry points—one from Arcot Road for terminal users and another from Kumaran Colony Main Road for commercial vehicles—ensuring smoother traffic segregation between public transit and business operations.

Towering above the terminal will be a 12-storey commercial building housing retail shops, restaurants, a food court, and office spaces. This development aims to modernise the city’s public transport infrastructure while transforming the area into a dynamic commercial and urban centre.
