The Tamil Nadu government will soon launch underground sewerage projects worth ₹3,360 crore across 14 municipal corporations under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. Aimed at strengthening urban infrastructure, this initiative focuses on improving access to essential services like water supply, sanitation, and sewerage.
Cities including Tirunelveli, Vellore, Dindigul, Salem, Cuddalore, and Nagercoil are among the beneficiaries. The project involves laying over 3,000 km of underground sewer pipelines and setting up new sewage pumping stations. Once completed, it will enable over five lakh households to shift from septic tanks to a centralized underground drainage (UGD) system.
According to the Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) Department, work is set to begin within a month and is expected to be completed in around two years, with timelines varying by location. The expanded UGD network is also expected to curb pollution of local rivers.
Statewide, over 60 urban local bodies have received AMRUT 2.0 approvals totaling ₹14,688 crore, including ₹4,942 crore in Central assistance. Launched in October 2021, AMRUT 2.0 aims to deliver integrated, sustainable improvements in urban living conditions.
