Meghalaya has officially commenced scientific coal mining, marking a significant shift nearly a decade after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned rat-hole mining. On March 17, 2025, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma virtually inaugurated the first scientific coal mining block at Saryngkham-A in East Jaintia Hills.
Since assuming office in 2018, the CM emphasized his government’s commitment to reviving coal mining while ensuring compliance with regulations. Efforts have been made to restore normalcy and support those affected by the ban. He also assured that the process of granting mining permissions to other applicants is ongoing.
The CM acknowledged Meghalaya’s distinct land rights and landholding systems, which added complexity to the mining resumption process. The NGT initially imposed the mining ban in 2014 due to safety concerns, a decision later upheld by the Supreme Court.
