Chennai Metro Rail’s (CMRL) Phase II expansion is now approximately 49% complete, with the Union government releasing ₹10,354.15 crore for the project.
Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu shared this update in the Rajya Sabha. The 118.9 km Phase II network, one of India’s largest urban transit expansions, was initially approved as a state-sector project by the Tamil Nadu government and formally sanctioned by the Centre in October 2024. Funding is being provided through a 50:50 special purpose vehicle (SPV) structure between the Union and state governments, with CMRL acting as the implementing agency.
During the session, DMK MP Rajathi raised a query regarding the ₹9,500 crore advanced by the Tamil Nadu government, which corresponds to the Centre’s share of the project cost.
