Coastal Connectivity: The $8000 Cr. Link is Underway

The MMRDA has begun tunnelling for the Orange Gate–Marine Drive twin tunnels, a key project linking the Eastern Freeway to the Mumbai Coastal Road.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the project will ease congestion for eastern suburb commuters and improve access to the Navi Mumbai airport. The 9.96 km twin tunnels—seven km of which will run underground—are expected to be completed by December 2028 and will include two lanes plus an emergency lane in each tunnel.

Costing ₹8,056 crore, the tunnels will help reduce bottlenecks on P. D'Mello Road and will run below 700 buildings and two railway lines, requiring advanced engineering and TBM technology suited to Mumbai’s coastal geology.
