Electronics manufacturer Corning has recently formed a strategic partnership with Indian telecommunications firm Optiemus Infracom, resulting in the establishment of Bharat Innovative Glass Technologies (BIG TECH). This joint venture is slated to construct a state-of-the-art cover glass manufacturing facility at SIPCOT Pillaipakkam in the Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu, involving a substantial investment of Rs 1,003 crore.
On January 22, 2024, a pivotal memorandum of understanding (MoU) was officially inked between Corning and Guidance Tamil Nadu, with the esteemed presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin. This landmark collaboration is anticipated to generate employment opportunities for approximately 840 individuals.
BIG TECH aims to pioneer the production of front-cover glass through advanced processes within India, catering to the needs of display panel manufacturers and mobile device producers in the country. This initiative marks the introduction of cutting-edge precision glass-processing technology to India. Notably, Corning, a crucial supplier for Apple, is poised to create significant value and contribute to job creation through this venture.
The Indian electronics sector is currently experiencing notable advantages from the global realignment of supply chains, diverting away from China. The favorable environment is further bolstered by the Indian government's production-linked incentives, designed to stimulate local manufacturing.
Widely recognized for its application in portable devices such as mobile phones, tablets, and laptops, Corning Gorilla Glass holds a prominent position in the market. Leveraging Optiemus Infracom's extensive experience in mobile phone components and laptop manufacturing in India, this collaboration is poised to make substantial contributions to the thriving Indian electronics landscape.
