Deep Trouble: Another Cave-In Hits Gurugram–Sohna Flyover

The Gurugram–Sohna Elevated Flyover in Gurugram has witnessed another road cave-in near Subhash Chowk, raising fresh concerns among residents over the corridor’s structural condition.

Officials have cordoned off the affected section as a safety measure to protect pedestrians and prevent vehicles from entering the depression.

The incident adds to a series of similar failures reported on the four-lane stretch. In December 2023, a pothole nearly five feet deep and two feet wide emerged near SD Adarsh Vidyalaya. About eight months later, another sinkhole measuring roughly two feet across and nearly eight metres deep appeared in the same area.

A previous collapse was also reported in August 2020 during the flyover’s construction phase, forcing authorities to temporarily suspend work.

According to local residents, the recurring subsidence may be linked to a sewer pipeline running beneath the road, which they say has experienced repeated damage and ground settlement, potentially weakening the surface structure.

Some residents further alleged that the project was expedited after the Rao Narbir Singh-led Public Works Department oversaw construction following the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Haryana in 2014. These allegations, however, remain unverified independently.

The latest cave-in has once again drawn attention to the long-term durability and engineering standards of the heavily trafficked Gurugram–Sohna corridor.
