Delhi's Waste Revolution: MCD Builds Sixth Energy Plant

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is advancing plans to establish a sixth waste-to-energy (WtE) plant in the city, with a new 2,000-tonne-per-day (TPD) facility proposed at the Ghazipur landfill site in east Delhi. This move comes shortly after the MCD secured environmental clearance for a 3,000 TPD WtE plant at Narela.

Bids for the Ghazipur project were invited on 09 July 2025. As part of the plan, approximately 15 acres of the Ghazipur landfill will be reclaimed to accommodate the facility.

Delhi currently generates significant daily waste volumes, with four operational WtE plants—at Bawana, Tehkhand, Okhla, and Ghazipur—collectively processing around 8,100 TPD. However, an additional 4,360 TPD continues to accumulate at the overburdened Bhalswa and Ghazipur landfills.

“To bridge this gap and prepare for future demand, two new WtE plants are being established. Environmental clearance has already been granted for the 3,000 TPD plant at Narela, and the Ghazipur plant will add another 2,000 TPD capacity,” a senior MCD official stated.

These initiatives are part of the civic body’s broader waste management strategy aimed at reducing landfill dependency and enhancing sustainable urban infrastructure.
