The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has approved a comprehensive set of reforms aimed at making the Capital’s water distribution system cleaner, more transparent, and environmentally sustainable.
At its 176th meeting, chaired by Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh, the Board cleared the induction of 600 electric vehicle (EV) water tankers as part of a shift toward technology-driven and citizen-centric water management. Of these, 300 EV tankers will provide free water supply to residential areas, particularly unauthorised and underserved colonies, while the remaining 300 will cater to commercial and institutional users under a regulated, paid framework. All tankers will be equipped with stainless steel tanks, GPS tracking, and app-based booking systems to reduce pollution and eliminate grey-market practices.
The Board also approved the scientific desilting of the Wazirabad Barrage pondage area to enhance raw water storage capacity, a move expected to generate revenue rather than incur costs. In addition, several sewer connectivity and decentralised sewage treatment projects were cleared to protect the Yamuna. These include sewer connectivity works for four groups of colonies—Sangam Nagar, Ranhola, Wazirabad, and Begumpur—benefiting nearly 12.5 lakh residents, as well as the Zindpur decentralised sewage treatment project to prevent the discharge of untreated sewage into the river.
