Driverless Dream: New BEML Trainset for Bengaluru Metro

BEML has rolled out a prototype of its new driverless Metro trainset for Bengaluru Metro’s Phase-2 network, which will serve the upcoming Pink Line and Blue (Airport) Line.

The prototype, designated 5RS-DM, was unveiled at BEML’s Bengaluru facility and successfully completed a test run. The trainsets are part of a ₹3,177-crore contract under which BEML will supply 318 Metro cars along with comprehensive maintenance support for 15 years. Highlighting the significance of the project, BMRCL Managing Director J. Ravishankar said it reflects BEML’s commitment to delivering state-of-the-art rolling stock that enhances the passenger commuting experience.

The new trains feature modern interiors, energy-efficient systems, wide inter-car walkways, USB charging ports, and compliance with international safety standards. They are equipped with communication-based train control (CBTC) technology, enabling fully autonomous operations at Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4).

In addition, BEML has secured further orders worth ₹819 crore from BMRCL for additional trainsets, increasing the total order from 318 to 396 Metro cars. BEML has previously supplied rolling stock for Bengaluru Metro’s Green and Purple lines.
