Elevating Assam: PM Lays Stone for ₹6,950 Cr Kaziranga Project

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 18 January 2026 laid the foundation stone for the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project at Kaliabor in Assam’s Nagaon district, with an estimated investment exceeding ₹6,950 crore.

The 86-km-long project involves the expansion of the Kaliabor–Numaligarh section of National Highway 715 and is aimed at strengthening regional connectivity while addressing critical infrastructure requirements. A key highlight of the project is the 35-km Elevated Wildlife Corridor passing through Kaziranga National Park, designed to ensure minimal disturbance to the park’s rich biodiversity. The project also includes a 21-km bypass and the widening of a 30-km highway stretch from two lanes to four lanes.

Once completed, the corridor will significantly improve connectivity to Upper Assam, including Dibrugarh and Tinsukia, reduce human–wildlife conflict, enhance road safety, and enable smoother movement of passenger and freight traffic. In addition, bypasses at Jakhalabandha and Bokakhat are expected to ease congestion and improve urban mobility. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma noted the strong public enthusiasm surrounding the initiative.
