Southern Railway said its Chennai Division has made notable progress in infrastructure strengthening and track modernisation works during 2025–26, leading to the removal and easing of several Permanent Speed Restrictions (PSRs) on important rail corridors.
According to the railway zone, the speed enhancements were made possible through a series of engineering measures such as track renewals, formation strengthening, curve realignment, transition corrections, and continuous monitoring of track geometry and ride quality parameters.
As part of the ongoing upgrades, permissible train speeds have been increased on certain sections between Chennai Central and Arakkonam on the Chennai Central–Jolarpettai route. These improvements were carried out at locations previously affected by speed restrictions caused by reverse curves, following targeted corrective works.
Railway officials stated that the infrastructure improvements are intended to enhance operational efficiency, reduce travel time, and further strengthen passenger safety across key routes under the Chennai Division.
