To accelerate the adoption of cleaner technologies, the Centre is preparing to launch a ₹5,000 crore scheme within the next quarter, expected to be titled the National Strategy for Sustainable Secondary Steel. Awaiting Union Cabinet approval, the program is designed to align India's steel sector with the nation's 2070 net-zero emissions mandate.
While the scheme is open to all market participants, it specifically addresses secondary steel manufacturers, who drive a significant portion of national output but lack the capital to adopt advanced green technologies. Currently, India’s steel sector emits 2.55 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of crude steel—exceeding the global average of 1.9 tonnes. This upcoming framework will complement existing sustainable manufacturing policies, balancing industrial growth with aggressive decarbonization goals.
