Bhutan’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Lyonpo Gem Tshering, met India’s Union Minister of Power, Manohar Lal, to discuss strengthening the long-standing energy partnership between the two countries.
The discussions focused on optimising power generation from the 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, while both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the early commissioning of the 1,200 MW Punatsangchhu-I project. The ministers also reviewed the future development of the Sankosh Hydropower Project and deliberated on long-term transmission infrastructure planning with a horizon extending to 2040.
Another key area of discussion was improving power supply scheduling and approval mechanisms, particularly during Bhutan’s lean seasons when domestic demand exceeds generation. Both sides agreed on the need to streamline processes to ensure reliable and timely power availability during these periods.
Highlighting the broader significance of the partnership, Lyonpo Tshering said that the energy collaboration between Bhutan and India extends beyond economic growth to encompass social and environmental benefits. The meeting, held on 3 February 2026, reaffirmed the strong and collaborative relationship between the two nations in the power sector.
