Ganga Expressway: UP’s ₹36,000 Crore High-Speed Lifeline

On April 29, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 594-km Ganga Expressway in Hardoi, a ₹36,230 crore greenfield infrastructure project set to transform connectivity across Uttar Pradesh.

The six-lane, access-controlled expressway—expandable to eight lanes—connects Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh to Prayagraj in the east, creating a high-speed corridor across key economic regions. It is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities from 10–12 hours to nearly six hours, significantly improving both passenger and freight movement.

The expressway traverses 12 districts, including Meerut, Bulandshahr, Hapur, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Raebareli, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj, enhancing intra-state connectivity. A key highlight is a 3.5-km emergency landing strip in Shahjahanpur designed for dual civilian and defence use.

The project also includes plans for manufacturing and logistics hubs spread over 2,635 hectares, aimed at lowering logistics costs and boosting industrial competitiveness. Improved connectivity is expected to support agriculture by enhancing access to urban and export markets, thereby increasing farmer incomes. Additionally, the expressway is likely to spur tourism and generate employment opportunities.

Integrated with major corridors such as the Agra-Lucknow, Jewar Link, and Farrukhabad Link Expressways, the Ganga Expressway forms a crucial part of Uttar Pradesh’s expanding transport network, supporting long-term economic growth in the state.
